Dear Professor Joseph,
Thank you for your assistance this last year in helping CALYX reach new and emerging writers. I'm writing again because we are currently hosting our general submission period, wherein women and non-binary writers can submit poetry and prose between now and December 31.
As always, I was wondering if you could let your students (and colleagues!) know about this opportunity. Poets can submit up to 6 poems per submission, while fiction and non-fiction writers can send us a piece with a 5,000 word maximum. We accept both online submissions and hard copy. While our fee is normally $5 per submission, we do have a student rate of $3 per submission. We have absolutely no restrictions on subject, voice, tone, or perspective. We are simply looking for great writing.
A part of our process that may be useful to your students is our response portion. Any submissions that are held for final discussion receive feedback from our editorial collective. We find that it's a great way to engage with and encourage our writers.
I've attached a flyer that can be dispersed, but full guidelines can be found on our website at calyxpress.org/submission.html.
This year we are also holding a special submission period for writing and art that engages with the 19th Amendment. The centennial is in 2020, and we are creating a special issue that discusses the myriad ways in which women engage with and experience political movements. Poetry, prose, and art are accepted through December 31 and there is no fee. Guidelines are at https://www.calyxpress.org/19th-amendment-centennial/.
