Poet Laureate Sought for Mayflower Anniversary

Plymouth, MA Ceremony will Commemorate 400 years since Mayflower Voyage

(Plymouth, MA, November 15, 2019) – When visitors, both international and national, descend on Plymouth, MA in 2020 to commemorate the Mayflower story, the opening ceremony will include its first Poet Laureate. Applications are being sought nationwide through December 15.

The Plymouth Regional Economic Development Foundation (PREDF) will fund the prestigious two-year honor that will begin on April 20, 2020. This highly regarded position will reflect Plymouth's rich literary community, past and present, and will serve as an important community conduit for the arts. The Plymouth Poet Laureate will receive an honorarium of $2500 total over a two-year period.

"Plymouth is ready to show the world our talents and showcase who we are as a community," said Bill Hallisey, President of the PREDF Board of Trustees. "A Poet Laureate contributes, in a meaningful way, to the town's identity, and people want to be where there is culture, and businesses want to be where there is talent."

To apply, submit the following: A one-page "Poet's Statement," describing your vision for the responsibilities of the Poet Laureate position; your resume or curriculum vitae; and three published original works. Mail or deliver to the Plymouth Public Library – 132 South Street – Plymouth, MA 02360. Postmark deadline is December 15. Applications can be found at Plymouthpubliclibrary.com/poetlaureate

"The Foundation and our partners started exploring the possibility of establishing the post of Poet Laureate several months ago," said Stephen Cole, Executive Director of PREDF. "We learned that most states and many cities and towns have appointed one, and we thought a town that has four centuries of history has a lot to celebrate.  We are overdue for a Poet Laureate."

Plymouth's Poet Laureate will be chosen by a Selection Panel that includes Heather Casey, Restaurateur - Mallebar Brasserie & Blue Eyed Crab;  Jennifer Harris, Library Director - Plymouth Public Library;  David Kindy, Reporter - Old Colony Memorial / Gatehouse Media; Amy Naples, Executive Director - Plymouth Area Chamber of Commerce; and Stephen Cole, Executive Director – PREDF.
