Entries are now being accepted for the 2020 Maria W. Faust Sonnet Contest. Mark you calendar for our Take A Leap event on February 29. Details coming soon.As retiring director Ted Haaland transitions to his new status of benefactor and director emeritus, we thought it would be nice to share a sonnet that he composed for Maria in October of 2015. We hope you will find inspiration in his love letter to his muse.
Sad Sonneteer
I run around from pillar to the post—
If one opponent it might been a joust,
But actually, I fight myself, alone,
Self-tussling as lone poet, in my home. Some days, the question—Will my muse appear?
And if she does, will I shrink back in fear?
The prompts she brings to me I think are great,
And yet I fear my skills are not first-rate.Will I ever attain the bardic heights,
Or will I sit with pen, and fret through nights?
My muse has done the best she can for me—
Will I ever attain the summitry? My dear, my muse, I live in debt to you.
How much I wish to see more sonnets grow.—Ted Haaland

The Maria W. Faust Sonnet Contest is an annual event that welcomes entries from around the world. In brief, $2,000 in prizes are offered, with a $5.00 entry fee for up to 3 sonnets. If you would like to submit more than 3 sonnets, then a separate entry fee will be required. For complete contest information, visit:sonnetcontest.org
The deadline for entries is June 1, 2020. Submissions should be made through our on-line process, with payment option by PayPal or check. If this process presents a hardship, instructions for entering by mail will be provided upon request. Just send us an email.entries@sonnetcontest.org
There is no fee for entrants in the Youth category (high school and younger) or for undergraduate college students. We hope this will encourage more young people to explore the sonnet form.
