POSITION

The department of English, Communication & Media at Adams State University invites applications for a one-year Visiting Professor of Creative Writing (position #FA8017). This position may be renewable depending on enrollment and departmental needs.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

We are a department with programs in both English and Communication & Media. Our English program consists of degrees in English/Liberal Arts, English/Creative Writing, and English/Secondary Education. We also offer courses online and via print through Adams State's Extended Studies program.

The successful candidate will teach courses in Poetry, Fiction, and Creative Nonfiction, the Creative Writing Capstone course, as well as other English courses as needed, including ENG 101 Communication Arts I, ENG 102 Communication Arts II, and/or various literature courses. This position will also play a lead role in efforts to revise the Creative Writing program, which may include updating it, combining it with existing programs, expanding it beyond Creative Writing, etc. This position will also play a principal role in recruiting new majors. We are especially interested in candidates with areas of expertise in one or more of the following areas: journalism, literature, composition, assessment, English Language Learning, or any combination thereof.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • A Ph.D. or MFA in hand at the time of appointment (ABD considered) in English, Creative Writing, Composition, or related field.
  • At least one year's experience teaching undergraduates, and an interest in and a passion for teaching undergraduate students.
  • Ability and desire to engage in student recruitment and retention efforts, as well as efforts to grow and/or revise the English program, specifically the Creative Writing degree.
  • Ability to treat others with respect, civility, and courtesy and to work honestly, and collegiality with employees, students, and the community. This includes the to use appropriate conflict management skills to effectively manage any disagreement that might arise or to bring the disagreement to management for assistance in productive resolution when the situation requires.
  • Adams State University is committed to the development of online courses and programs. The online division of the university is Adams State Online. The university has a comprehensive Academic Instructional Technology Center committed to the support of faculty teaching online. Support includes training in the process of teaching online, Instructional designers to support the development and designing of online courses and instructional tools to support video lectures, live classrooms and cloud-based storage for instructional training videos.
  • Successful candidates for this position will be committed to the willingness to develop and teach online courses.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Expertise in journalism, literature, composition, assessment, English Language Learning, or any combination thereof.
SALARY

$42,000 to $45,000, depending upon experience, for a typical 9-month academic-year appointment. Adams State University offers a competitive benefits package in addition to the salary.
