Nonprofit Announces the 2020 Pen Parentis Fellowship for New Parents
New York, NY – The writer-parent friendly nonprofit, Pen Parentis, seeks submissions starting March 1, 2020 for its 2020 Pen Parentis Fellowship for New Parents. Applications will be accepted through April 17, 2020 at midnight (or postmark for mailed entries). Guidelines call for a new, never-published fiction story – any genre, on any subject – of up to 710 words.
The mission of Pen Parentis is to provide critical resources to help writers stay on creative track after starting a family. Founder and executive director, M. M. De Voe says, "This fellowship for new parents is an extension of our mission. We change the word count annually because we want to encourage writers to create new work during an especially demanding part of parenting."
One talented writer who is the parent of at least one child under 10 years old will be awarded a $1000 fellowship to further their writing career, a year of mentorship and the opportunity to read their winning story at the Pen Parentis Literary Salon in New York City on Tuesday, November 10, 2020. The winning story will also be published in Dreamers Creative Writing Magazine (both online and in print) as well as included in the annual Dreamers Writing Anthology.
Since 2010, Pen Parentis has annually awarded $1000 and a space on their illustrious stage to a single, talented writer who created a new work while at a demanding stage of their parenting process. The first Pen Parentis Fellow, Abby Sher has just published a new work, Miss You Love You Hate You Bye with Farrar Straus & Giroux. Kirkus has given the novel a Starred review, and Amazon chose it as a Best Book of the Month. The current Fellow, Anjali Vaidya, is using her award money to travel with her toddler to India to research her novel-in-progress.
The competition is completely blind and entirely talent-based. Guidelines can be found at penparentis.org/guidelines. Winners list will be announced August 2020.
