CRWROPPS Post: PEN America Literary Grants

2021 Grants open now for submissions

Since 1963, the PEN America Literary Awards, Grants, and Fellowships programs have honored outstanding voices in literature across diverse genres, including fiction, poetry, nonfiction, children's literature, translation, and drama. With the help of our partners, PEN America confers distinct grants to support emerging writers and works-in-progress.

Submissions for the 2021 grants are open now, and we hope you'll apply and spread the word!

The PEN/Phyllis Naylor Grant for Children's and Young Adult Novelists awards $5,000 to an author of children's or young adult fiction for a novel-in-progress. The award was developed to help writers whose work is of high literary caliber and to assist at a crucial moment in their career. Deadline: August 1, 2020. Learn more here.
The PEN/Heim Translation Fund Grants support the translation of book-length works of fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, or drama that have not previously appeared in English in print or have appeared only in an outdated or otherwise flawed translation. The grants aim to provide support for the completion of translations-in-progress. Deadline: June 1, 2020. Learn more here.
The PEN/Jean Stein Grant for Literary Oral History recognizes a work of nonfiction that uses oral history to illuminate an event, individual, place, or movement. The winner receives a $10,000 grant meant to help maintain or complete their ongoing, unpublished work-in-progress. Deadline: August 1, 2020. Learn more here.

The PEN America Literary Awards Program works year-round to support writers at all stages of their careers.
