Split This Rock cultivates, teaches, and celebrates poetry that bears witness to injustice and provokes social change.

Black text appears over a white background that says 2021 Poem of the Week Call for Poems. Three thick lines in yellow and red and gray appear under the text.

Split This Rock's Poem of the Week Series is now welcoming submissions.

We're seeking new voices! Poets who are not currently published in The Quarry: A Social Justice Poetry Database are invited to send poems that aim to provoke change, bear witness to injustice, and imagine a liberated & livable world.

Poems selected from this call will be published in Split This Rock's Poem of the Week Series. Poem of the Week goes out on Fridays each week to a network of over 8,000 poets and readers who value the role of social justice poetry in public life. Poems published in the series have a permanent home in the only searchable online social justice poetry database, The Quarry. This digital anthology of over 600 poems is a resource used by poets, educators, and organizers and has been viewed over 700,000 times since its launch in 2015.

There is no reading fee for this call. Donations, however, are welcomed to help expand Split This Rock's capacity to compensate poets, provide free opportunities, and offer scholarships in all its programs. Donations can be made via Submittable or using our online donation portal where lower transaction fees are possible.

This call is limited to the first 120 submissions -- send your work before the close date. The call closes on Wednesday, February 24, 2021, 11:59 pm EST or when the maximum number of submissions is reached, whichever comes soonest.

For submission guidelines, an overview of the types of poems we seek, accessibility information, and other details, please visit Split This Rock's website.

Thank you for the courage of your poems and we hope to have the opportunity to consider your work for Poem of the Week!

DonateHelp us sustain Split This Rock

"Poetry is a political act because it involves telling the truth.
-June Jordan

After we published a statement in defense of Black lives in June 2020, a major donor withdrew a critical $55,000 annual funding commitment.

Help us keep Split This Rock community-funded so we can keep centering poets and poetry that speak truth to power.
Split This Rock's Board has set a bold challenge to replace this lost funding. If 1,000 people contribute $5 per month, we can replace the lost $55k in one year. If 11,000 people contribute $5 per month, we can replace the lost funding in one month, hire more staff, and fully fund Split This Rock to sustain the work long term, ensuring year-round stipends for Teaching Artists and Featured Poets, honorariums for the Poem of the Week Series, accessibility services for events, and equitable pay to honor the tremendous work of our small staff.

Please consider becoming a sustaining donor for as little as $5 per month. A monthly donation at any level increases stability as we face an uncertain funding landscape. If you aren't able to donate right now but this work means something to you, please help us share the poetry, the resources, and this call for support.

Visit Split This Rock's website to make a one-time donation
or become a sustaining monthly donor today.
