PLOUGH QUARTERLY'S FIRST ANNUAL RHINA P. ESPAILLAT POETRY AWARD

   IS NOW OPEN FOR SUBMISSIONS!

Plough Quarterly, an award-winning international magazine of faith, culture, and society since 1920, will select its first annual Rhina P. Espaillat Poetry Award in the summer of 2021. The winning poet will receive a two thousand dollar award and the poem will be published in Plough Quarterly. In addition, two finalists will receive two hundred and fifty dollars as well as publication in Plough Quarterly.

This award honors the achievements of the great Dominican-American poet, translator, and public school teacher Rhina Polonia Espaillat. The Rhina P. Espaillat Poetry Award will be awarded for an original poem of not more than fifty lines that reflects her lyricism, empathy, and ability to find grace in everyday events of life.

In contrast to most other poetry competitions, Plough Quarterly will not contract out judging of this award to a prominent poet. Instead, the Plough Quarterly Poetry Editor will select approximately twenty poems for further consideration, and then the editors will reach a consensus on the winner and the two finalists.

Submissions are now open as of January 1, 2021, and the deadline for submissions is March 30, 2021. All poems must be submitted electronically at plough.com/PoetryAward. All decisions of the editors will be final. Results will be announced in early summer on the Plough Quarterly website, and by email to all contestants.

Plough Quarterly editor Peter Mommsen said, "We are thrilled to expand our support for contemporary poetry and to honor one of our literary treasures, Rhina Espaillat."

Submissions are already rolling in and we look forward to seeing the full collection of talent that Rhina's poetry award can garner in the next couple months!

   Most kind regards,

   Shannon McPherson
