The Deadline for the 2021 Maria W. Faust Sonnet Contest is ONE WEEK FROM TODAY!

If you haven't submitted your sonnets yet, time is running out. Make sure to get your entries in by June 1st.

And don't forget to mark your calendar for our annual Closing Event on Zoom. Having a virtual event offers each winner the opportunity to read their sonnet to a worldwide audience. It was a wonderful event in 2020 and promises to be even better this year!

Maria W. Faust Sonnet Contest Call for Entries

Entries are now being accepted for the 2021 Maria W. Faust Sonnet Contest. Please note that the entry process has changed for 2021. It is now a one step system. Sonnet(s) must be submitted with the Entry Form. Complete instructions for entering are available on our website.

The Maria W. Faust Sonnet Contest is an annual event that welcomes entries from around the world. Cash prizes, totaling up to $3,000, will be awarded in several categories, including:

  • Top Three Sonnets
  • Regional (Three Winners - Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa)
  • Best Youth (Three Winners - High School and Younger)
  • Laureate's Choice (Fifteen Winners)

There is a $5 Entry Fee for up to three sonnets per entry. There is no fee for entrants in the Youth category (high school and younger) or for undergraduate college students. For complete contest information, visit:

The deadline for entries is June 1, 2021. Submissions should be made through our on-line process, with payment option by PayPal or check. If this process presents a hardship, instructions for entering by mail will be provided upon request. Just send us an email.

Poems from the Maria W. Faust Sonnet Contest

Copies of the new anthology Poems from the Maria W. Faust Sonnet Contest are now in stock! The book contains winning entries from 2015-2019 in the Top Three, Regional, and Youth categories. The price is $10 each (plus $5 for shipping; discounted shipping for multiple copies).

The Creative Writing Program in the Department of English invites applications for the Edelstein-Keller Writer in Residence Fellowship! This fellowship is a nine-month academic year position 2023-2025, starting August 28, 2023. Deadline for applications is Monday, April 3, 2023. The fellow will be in residence on the Minneapolis campus for four semesters over two years, teaching two creative writing courses (graduate and undergraduate) each academic year. The fellow will participate in creative writing events and committees, including admissions and graduate thesis committees, and will give a public reading of their work. It's pretty incredible: one-month holiday accommodation in Crested Butte, Colorado , and a $1,000 stipend.
