About the Center

Located at James Madison University and housed in the College of Arts and Letters, Furious Flower Poetry Center is the nation's first academic center for Black poetry. Furious Flower is committed to ensuring the visibility, inclusion, and critical consideration of Black poets in American letters, as well as in the whole range of educational curricula. Our programming seeks to cultivate an appreciation for poetry among students of all levels—from elementary to graduate school and beyond. In addition, Furious Flower seeks to support and promote Black poets at all stages of their careers and to preserve the history of Black poets for future generations. 

 

Position Overview 

The Furious Flower Poetry Center (FFPC) at James Madison University welcomes applications for the position of Assistant /Associate Director to begin 25 August, 2022. This position reports to the FFPC Executive Director (ED) and collaborates with the ED to manage the Center's many programs and special events, including the Reading Series, Summer Legacy Seminars, Children's Creativity Camps, Collegiate Summits, and tribute events. The successful candidate should have experience in grant-writing, fundraising, and community outreach, as the FFPC engages partners across campus, regionally, and nationally in enacting the overall mission and vision of the Center. 

 

The Assistant/Associate Director also serves as faculty in the English Department, and teaches one course in Literature or Creative Writing per semester at the discretion of the Academic Unit Head. This 12-month instructional faculty position is tenured/ tenure-eligible in the English Department, in accordance with the rules and guidelines of the JMU Faculty Handbook, the College of Arts and Letters, and the English Department's Personnel Action Committee.

 

 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Event management
  • Grant writing and reporting
  • Student-worker supervision and mentorship
  • Editing (online and print publications)
  • Program evaluation and assessment
  • Community outreach and engagement
  • Teaching (1/1 course load)

 

 


Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A terminal degree in English, Creative Writing or African American Studies 
  • Significant creative and/or scholarly publications 
  • Demonstrated and substantial creative and/or scholarly engagement with poetry
  • Experience or interest in securing and managing grants
  • Evidence of excellent teaching at the undergraduate level
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, access and equity.
